Fact 1: Solaris on SPARC and Solaris on x86 are not binary compatible. [4]

Unless -- of course -- the binaries are either Java or ECMA .NET binaries.

Sun has been a proponent of Java for a very long time, and Java runs pretty nicely on Solaris. Mono, of course, also runs pretty nicely on Solaris.

Microsoft is telling application developers to use .NET. The reason for this is that Windows is back on the POWER architecture for the XBox 2 and XP Embedded. It's because Microsoft recognizes that you and I, as developers, cannot make binaries optimized for chipsets that don't yet exist, but that may have features that a class library can leverage.

Sun's made these points before, too. The difference is Microsoft has control of the software development tools on millions of developer's desktops. They have control of most of the software market -- and we all know this.

It isn't viable to support even a half dozen Linux distributions reliably, even with an open source program. Real end user's cannot build from source code, to you're essentially limiting their choice based on what distributions a project chooses to support.

This is where Java and .NET come in. One binary runs anywhere. If AMD releases a 64 bit part, then as soon as the VM has been ported, all the Java/.NET applications immediately take advantage of the hardware, without having to be changed, without having to be ported, without having to have a new maintainer to work on the "AMD64" port.

C and C++ are a dieing environment for application development. The issue is that the amount of work and the number of contributors needed for an open source project to support even a handful of distributions is too high.

Distributions from source cannot be installed, and you'll have users crying that there aren't binary distributions for z80 Linux.
